High-speed cellular data network coverage is now rapidly expanding worldwide, and PC Card modems are enabling owners of some notebook computers to enjoy the benefits of wireless Internet connectivity. However, many people who need connectivity have been unable to take full advantage of the flexibility of PC Card modems.

For instance, not all computing devices feature the PCMCIA slots that are required to use PC Card modems. Standard PC Card modem drivers are not typically compatible with operating systems other than Microsoft Windows. For mobile work groups, shared connectivity using a PC Card modem is inelegant at best. It's often not cost-effective or practical to quickly set up computers for PC Card modems at the time connectivity is desired.
